Nadir Wilkins known to everyone as Nate Dawg seemed to be the most ruthless hustler in the hood. He went to school during the day, then hung out with the big boys at night. He lived in the projects when the apartments and everything else in the O was made out of bricks. The brick tunnel hallway from one end of the playground to the apartments was where the kids could go get shade from the heat and where the big dogs would shoot craps for money. The playground that was provided by the apartment complex only had a merry go round that would burn your arms and legs up when you sat on it. You had to hold on to the bars while the wheel was being turned by another kid willing to turn it for everyone and eventually run and hop on while it was still spinning. Or maybe one of the kid’s parents joined us at the playground and spun it, hopefully by the time the ride is over, you don’t have heat blisters on your hands from holding too tightly onto bars the sun had kissed all day at 100 plus degree weather.

It had no shade but maybe one of those cement tunnel apparitions where all the lil’ mannish ass boys and fast ass lil girls went to play ‘mommy and daddy’ so they could pretend to be having sex with their clothes on which is called hunching since that is all we were really doing. It was there that Nate lived with his mother, father, brother. You wouldn’t think Nate was a thug if you knew how his home was set up. He not only went to school every day, he also played football. He could floss like the best of em. He reminded me of Danny Zuko played by John Travolta in the 1978 movie Grease.

Nate’s father was a pastor. He went to church every Sunday and sat on the front row with his mother and brother; because he was the pastor’s son but he was also an awful son. He was the one that got everyone together like he ran the hood, but again he wasn’t bout dat life. He only pretended to be. Nate would be in the tunnel (the one that provided a passageway from one cluster apartments to the next) shooting craps and gambling with everyone while I played with the boys at the playground. I came to stay with my auntie and uncle because my mother wasn’t about nothing. She let a man beat on her in front of us and he had her selling her body all night so she slept all day. I couldn’t go to school as I should have been so my auntie and uncle took my sad ass in so I could go to school with Nate “wanna be the boss of me’ ass” and I guess so I wouldn’t end up like other unfortunate kids…..in the streets with no education and no direction in life.
